On a chance trip to Micro Center one day, I found a used Intel Arc B580 for $210. I immediatly jumped at this and shoved my original gaming PC RTX 3060 into the Workhorse. However, considering just one didn’t feel right, I picked up a second one used from facebook marketplace for $160.
This then had the challenge of how do I connect everything.
The first solution was to use two m.2 to PCIe adapters. Yes, they run the GPUs on x4 rather than x8, but hey it works. I had to take out one of the two m.2’s I had in the computer in order to do this however.
I fit one in M.2_3 and M.2_4, leaving the true m.2 drive in M.2_1. I found that I couldn’t populate M.2_2 and boot safely hence only keeping one M.2 drive in the computer at one time. Not sure why, but once all four GPUs showed up I vowed to just leave it be and be content that it works.
This now left me with 72GB of vRAM, 48 dedicated to training and 24 dedicated to model serving and hosting (think quant Qwen3, Whisper, etc)
Also to act as a voltage regulator between the now peripheral GPU PSU and my regular one, I added in a Power Supply Connector to make sure everything boots okay and doesn’t crash/hurt my GPUs under heavy load.
